IBC issues flood insurance warning to Canadians

By HUB SmartCoverage Team on January 23rd, 2018

Overland flood insurance has become more available across Canada in recent years, and IBC encourages those living in a flood-inflicted area to check the details of their insurance policies.

"We have seen the devastating effects that flooding can have on communities across our region," said Tom O'Handley, Manager, Government Relations, Atlantic, IBC.

“There is a need for everyone to be on alert and to be safe. That's why we want to help make sure that Atlantic Canadians are prepared and ready to deal with the damage when floods strike."

The last year has already seen an array of floods hitting cities across Canada, so as part of its report, the IBC has issued several helpful tips for filing flood-related claims.

These tips include advice for how to prevent damage, like storing items on the upper levels of your home, and ensuring that all large appliances, such as furnaces and hot water heaters, are elevated off the floor.

The report also provides advice for what to do if flooding damage has already occurred, including compiling a household inventory, and paying close attention to local authorities and weather developments.

Finally, the report also lends insight into how to file for a claim, recommending assessing and documenting all damage once it is safe to do so, and providing as many details as possible to your insurer.

Contact your insurance provider to find out what damage is covered in your plan, or if overland flood damage is available.
