TTC investigate streetcar safety

By HUB SmartCoverage Team on October 15th, 2018

The TTC are launching an investigation into the safety of its streetcars following a series of collisions with pedestrians.

Of the three collisions this month, two were fatal. Last Friday a man died following being trapped beneath a streetcar on The Queensway, meanwhile on Monday another male pedestrian died following a similar incident on Riverside.

The latest incident was not fatal, but did leave a pedestrian with injuries after he ran in front of a streetcar, which could not stop in time, on Roncesvalles Avenue.

Now an internal team of staff from the TTC’s streetcar division are working with the safety and environment department to discuss ways to improve streetcar routes and safety precautions.

"The risk assessment will allow us to determine root causes of each incident and identify any potential similarities between them,"said TTC spokesperson Stuart Green. "Every incident involving a TTC vehicle, like those in the past week, is reviewed to see if there are ways we can do things differently and if there are ways to prevent them from happening in the first place, particularly as it relates to a tragic fatality.”
